Earn a Medical Billing and Coding Certificate from a 100% online university
Ready yourself for a potential career path in medical office administration and medical billing and coding in 9 or 12 months with a Medical Billing or Medical Billing and Coding Certificate. After completing the 9 month Medical Billing Certificate, students will be trained for basic coding and financial cycle processes as well as increased knowledge of coding competencies used in medical offices and hospitals.
The 12 month Medical Billing and Coding Certificate provides a deep background in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology to prepare students to become successful medical coders. A virtual Professional Practice Experience must also be completed in order to complete the certificate program. This program also includes a student’s 1st attempt at either the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam* by AHIMA or the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certificate exam by AAPC*.
Both certificate options are aligned with the most current legal and ethical standards as well as the latest U.S. billing, reimbursement, and coding standards from the International Classification of Diseases.
Medical Billing and Coding Certificate Program Overview
After the completion of our certificate program, you will be met with a surplus knowledge and ability in the medical office administration.
Within the 9 month certificate students will complete 27 credit hours and 36 credit hours for the 12 month certificate. At a maximum, students may transfer in 9 semester hours from other programs. This program expands knowledge and skill sets to allow students to have the ability to work in the outpatient and inpatient medical settings. Additionally, students who complete the 12 month certificate program will be qualified to sit for an industry standard exam, with one exam sitting covered under the degree program*.
Courses will be structured as follows: over the length of four weeks, each course will have four modules, and each module has weekly units that must be completed. Modules are made up of quizzes, assignments and discussion posts.

Each certificate course builds on the next so students are not overwhelmed by all of the different coding regulations at one time. Program courses use curriculum and knowledge from previous courses to build deeper knowledge and expanded understanding. Students must complete all certificate courses in sequence.

After completing either the Medical Billing Certificate or the Medical Billing and Coding Certificate at Trident , the student will be prepared with the knowledge and skill to become successful in this rapidly growing industry.
