Dr. Okunji has been a member of Howard University’s faculty since 2011, serving as an assistant professor (tenure track) since 2013. She is an accomplished academic researcher. Additionally, she has been named a diversity scholar through the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science (GHUCCTS).

As of January 2017, Dr. Okunji has initiated a new research project that focuses on ways to enhance the use of electronic records to better understand diabetes and cardiovascular disorders in minority populations. She has been awarded external and internal grants focused on the use of big data to knowledge (BD2K) to better understand health disparities.
