Faculty Spotlight: Meet Nursing Educator Dr. Misti Ludwig

Nursing Is More Than the Bedside. Dr. Misti Ludwig Wants Students to See the Whole Profession.

Ask someone to picture a nurse, and they may imagine a person in scrubs caring for a patient at a hospital bedside. That work matters, but Misti wants students to understand that nursing reaches far beyond it.

As a Department Chair and Assistant Professor, Dr. Ludwig helps students recognize the range, complexity, and responsibility built into the profession.

A Field Far Bigger Than Most People Realize

For Dr. Ludwig, the most common misconception about nursing is simple:

“That nurses only work at the bedside.”

The profession offers many other paths.

“When in reality nursing is a massive field,” Ludwig explains. “Nurses are researchers, academic administrators, policy makers, informaticists, and consultants. They manage multi-million dollar budgets for healthcare systems and develop the very curricula used to train the next generation of healthcare providers.”

Those roles require a deep understanding of both science and technology.

“Nursing requires a mastery of pathophysiology, pharmacology, and complex technology,” she says. “Nurses don't just "care" for patients; they manage complex hemodynamic monitoring, titration of life-saving drips, and the integration of multi-system data to drive patient outcomes.”

That expertise helps nurses recognize risks and act before a patient’s condition worsens.

“Nurses are often the first to identify critical clinical changes. They use advanced critical thinking and clinical judgment to intervene before a situation becomes life-threatening,” Ludwig explains. “A physician might order a medication, but the nurse is the safety net who determines if that medication is safe for the patient’s current physiological state.”

Her perspective highlights the knowledge and judgment nurses bring to every decision.

Helping Students See More Possibilities

Dr. Ludwig encourages students to consider how nursing knowledge can be used across healthcare.

Some nurses build careers in direct patient care. Others pursue research, education, administration, informatics, consulting, or policy. Across those settings, nurses apply clinical knowledge, interpret complex information, identify risks, and help shape patient outcomes.

Understanding that range may help students to think more expansively about where their education may lead.

Creativity Beyond Nursing

Away from her academic work, Dr. Ludwig brings her creativity to a community theatre program, where she helps build props and costumes. She especially enjoys challenging projects that give her the chance to experiment, solve problems, and make something tangible.

Nursing Without Narrow Limits

Dr. Ludwig’s path began with a desire to make a difference in the lives of people who need care. Today, she also helps future nurses understand the many forms that difference can take.

Nursing happens at the bedside, but it also shapes research, education, technology, administration, policy, and patient safety. By recognizing the full reach of the profession, students can begin to imagine a path that fits their abilities, interests, and goals.
