Transfer students, especially at the doctoral level, are seeking the smoothest of transitions. Each course is part of an incremental process that’s intertwined with the dissertation (now called “doctoral study project” in the EdD program), something that requires every ounce of a student’s time and energy.

Trident University supports eligible full-time employees by offering tuition remission. Many of us will say that it is one of the many benefits of working at Trident. It is the reason many of my co-workers would often ask me, "Why aren't you in a master's program?" and, often times, my response would be, "I'm not sure which program to enroll in."

As I look, some of the most important lessons I've learned, whether it's been as a leader, family member, or educator, have been on how to communicate properly. Years ago, when I was a developing as a young leader, I remember looking at a problem and then issuing guidance with my soldiers in a raised voice. At the time I felt that this was an effective way to communicate in this situation.

From a young age, Trident Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences student and Veterans and Family Scholarship recipient Eleanor Donaldson had dreams of joining the military. But helping her family make ends meet got in the way of those dreams. By dropping out of school to take on full time work, her hopes of enlisting were dashed.

Very recently, I made the always-bragged-about but ever-scary leap from the comfortable confines of the military, over the cliff of retirement, and into the pool of civilian life. I enjoyed 29 years of a steady income, steady and free medical insurance, extremely low cost life insurance, and a structured work environment (outside of the occasional chaos of combat).

For the first 25 years of her life, Stephanie Melo had very little exposure to a work environment. Her family emigrated to a remote part of Canada, an area where career opportunities were limited - especially for women. It was a classic immigrant story - financial struggles, economic and social obstacles, and a language barrier.
