We are pleased to share with you that the IRS has introduced the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program – a free tax preparation program available to qualified active duty military, veterans, and their families who earned $53,000 or less ($60,000 or less in some areas) in the calendar year 2014. In addition, those who worked during 2014 and had a household income less than $52,427 may be eligible to receive the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) of up to $6,143. To qualify, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or resident alien for all of 2014
- Have a social security number valid for employment
- Have earned income during 2014
Also, you:
- Cannot use “Married Filing Separately” filing status
- Cannot be claimed as a qualifying child
- Cannot file Form 2555 or 2555-EZ (relating to foreign earned income)
