September 30, 2014 – Cypress, CA – Global Health Security (GHS), a concentration in Trident University International’s (Trident) Master of Science in Health Sciences (MSHS) program, gives students an up-to-date perspective on the frequently changing global and public health landscape. Utilizing modern techniques and perspectives that touch on education, disease prevention, economic effects, and bioterrorism, graduates of this program emerge with the tools and necessary critical thinking skills to make an impact in this field.
The recent outbreak of the Ebola virus in western Africa – the worst in history – is just one of the major global and public health threats facing the world right now. A decade ago the outbreak of SARS, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, infected 8,273 people and cost the world $30 billion in four months. Other factors that pose a significant risk are numerous. These include HIV/AIDS, anthrax, and the rise of antibiotic drug resistance. The GHS curriculum explores all of these issues. Among the courses offered are Bioterrorism and Human Security, Global Sustainability, and Global Health Security and Diplomacy.
Trident’s MSHS program is housed within its College of Health Sciences, which is directed by Dean Holly Orozco. Dr. Orozco, who was recently appointed to the American Public Health Association (APHA) Education Board, leads a faculty team of experts with global knowledge and practical experience conducting research in the field.
Dr. Angela Hegamin, Director of the MSHS program, has over two decades of experience as a public health educator and researcher in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention, tobacco use prevention and cessation, and drug abuse treatment. Dr. Gayl M. Anglin serves as the program’s Faculty Lead. Her public health experience spans over a decade and includes public health program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Among her research areas are women’s health, substance abuse treatment, the right to health under international law, and the intersection of culture and health in a global context.
As global health threats become more prominent, the field of global health security will be in need of well trained and forward thinking professionals. While the GHS concentration is offered solely within the MSHS degree program, Trident offers other health sciences degrees, with varying concentrations, at the masters level, as well as the bachelors and doctoral levels.
